ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – The Ogun State Police Command says a tyre burst causes the road crash involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The police disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists at the command’s headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, stressing that no life-threatening injuries were recorded in the incident.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, preliminary investigations show that the crash, which occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, is neither a result of reckless driving nor foul play. “Findings so far indicate that the accident is caused by a sudden tyre burst, which leads to the driver losing control of the vehicle,” Babaseyi says.
He explains that operatives of the command respond promptly to the scene, secure the area and ensure the smooth flow of traffic to prevent secondary incidents on the busy expressway.
The police spokesperson assures the public that further investigations will continue to establish all surrounding circumstances, even as he advises motorists to prioritise vehicle maintenance.
“We urge all road users to regularly inspect their vehicles, especially tyres, before embarking on journeys, particularly on major highways,” Babaseyi adds.
The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway remains one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors, with frequent accidents linked to speeding, mechanical failure and poor vehicle maintenance.
The police reiterate their commitment to public safety and traffic management across the state.
