ANAMBRA, Nigeria – Officers of the Anambra State Police Command have taken policing beyond crime prevention, launching a statewide sanitation exercise and free medical outreach to mark the 2026 National Police Day.
The initiative, carried out across all eight Area Commands and 56 divisional headquarters, combined environmental clean-up with basic healthcare services — a dual effort aimed at improving public health while strengthening trust between citizens and law enforcement.
Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, said the programme reflects a broader vision of policing that goes beyond security enforcement.
“This is aimed at promoting community health and strengthening police-community relations,” he said.
From clearing public spaces to engaging residents on hygiene practices, officers worked within communities to reinforce the idea that safety extends beyond crime control.
The outreach also provided free medical services, targeting residents who may lack access to basic healthcare.
According to Orutugu, the exercise underscores the evolving role of the Nigeria Police Force in community development.
“We are committed not only to ensuring security, but also contributing to the overall well-being of citizens,” he added.
The activities were not limited to Anambra.
In Abuja, similar programmes were held, with officers conducting sanitation exercises around Area One Motor Park — part of a coordinated national effort to improve public engagement and reshape perceptions of policing.
