ABUJA, Nigeria – Police in the Federal Capital Territory have launched a full investigation into the killing of an Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) revenue officer during a confrontation in Wuse 2.
The victim, identified as Oladipupo Akinola, was allegedly shot dead on Friday at NITEL Junction during an enforcement operation targeting vehicles without valid permits.
The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Ahmed Sanusi, has ordered a “thorough and discreet” investigation into the incident, according to police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh on Saturday.
Authorities say the probe will focus on identifying the alleged officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) involved, as well as other individuals linked to the incident.
Preliminary reports indicate that AMAC officials had stopped a Hilux vehicle suspected of operating with expired 2025 permits when tensions escalated.
According to AMAC’s Director of Operations, Shehu Shugaba, the situation deteriorated after occupants of the vehicle reportedly called for reinforcement, leading to the arrival of armed civil defence personnel.
“It was during the altercation that one of the officers shot and killed the revenue staff,” Shugaba said.
He added that the suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting, raising concerns over accountability and enforcement coordination among security agencies.
The police have urged members of the public to provide credible information to aid the investigation, assuring that all those involved will be brought to justice.
The incident has sparked outrage among local officials, who stress that revenue officers are legitimate government workers carrying out statutory duties—not informal agents as often perceived.
