Wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti
UMUAHIA, Nigeria – Wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti has launched a fertiliser distribution programme for women farmers across the state as part of efforts to strengthen food security and improve agricultural productivity.
The initiative, carried out in partnership with the Abia State Ministry of Agriculture, targeted women farmers from the state’s 17 local government areas.
Speaking during the distribution exercise in Umuahia on Thursday, Mrs. Otti said the programme reflects the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable economic empowerment.
She acknowledged the challenges confronting women farmers, including rising farming costs and changing weather conditions, but praised their resilience in sustaining food production.
“Despite the difficulties, women continue to plant, nurture and provide for families and communities. That strength is extraordinary, and today we honour it,” she said.
Mrs. Otti noted that the intervention was not a one-off programme but part of broader efforts to support women-led agricultural enterprises and improve livelihoods in rural communities.
“This intervention is not a one-time gesture. It is part of a continuing promise to keep creating opportunities until the women who feed this state can also prosper from their labour,” she added.
She also encouraged young Nigerians to embrace agriculture, describing the sector as a pathway to innovation, entrepreneurship, and wealth creation.
“There is dignity in agriculture, and there is a future in it,” she stated.
Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Prince Enweremadu, described women as the backbone of rural economic activity and said the programme aligns with the government’s food security agenda.
Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Ijeoma, and Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, also commended the initiative, saying empowering women farmers would reduce poverty and strengthen household incomes.
