OYO, Nigeria – Gunmen storm Oyo school, abduct principal and several terrified students
Gunmen attack a secondary school in Oyo State on Friday morning, abducting the principal and an unspecified number of students during a violent raid that leaves residents in panic.
The attack occurred at Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, in Oriire Local Government Area between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., according to community sources.
Residents say the armed men invade the school premises and forcefully whisk away students before abducting the school principal, Rachael Alamu. A teacher also suffers gunshot injuries during the attack, although authorities have yet to confirm the severity of the wounds.
“The attackers arrived suddenly and began shooting. They took the principal and some students away before anyone could react,” a resident says.
Witnesses say the gunmen escaped through a forest reserve bordering the community after fleeing with the principal in her vehicle.
Residents blame delayed security intervention on the absence of a nearby police station.
The spokesperson for the Oyo State Police Command, CSP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirms the incident but says authorities are still verifying the number of abducted victims.
“There was an attack in the area, but the exact number of persons abducted is yet to be confirmed,” Ayanlade says.
He adds that the Commissioner of Police and tactical officers are already heading to the community for assessment and rescue operations.
The latest incident heightens concerns over rising insecurity and repeated attacks on schools across Nigeria, with parents and residents demanding stronger security presence in rural communities.
