ABUJA, Nigeria – The World Health Organization unveils a new behavioural insights toolkit to combat the rising use of harmful skin-lightening products containing mercury.
Launched in Panama City, the initiative helps governments understand the social and cultural drivers behind skin bleaching and design targeted interventions.
WHO behavioural expert Elena Altieri says understanding user behaviour is critical. “Behavioural insights show us where and how to intervene effectively,” she states.
The agency warns that mercury, commonly found in such products, poses severe neurological and environmental risks, especially to children and pregnant women.
With the global market projected to reach $16.4 billion, WHO stresses the urgency of coordinated action to curb demand and promote safer alternatives.
