LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos Waste Management Authority has revoked licences of underperforming waste contractors and restructured collection routes across Lagos State to address mounting waste challenges driven by rapid urban growth.
Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin on Saturday says the action follows a comprehensive operational review to match operators’ capacity with increasing waste volumes. “Operators who failed to meet required standards have been removed to protect public health and environmental sustainability,” he states.
Affected firms include Kenny JPS, Clean Craft Nigeria Limited and Doveroost Limited, among others operating in key districts such as Igando-Ikotun and Eti-Osa.
Gbadegesin explains that route realignment targets fast-expanding areas where existing operators can no longer cope. “In locations where development has outpaced capacity, we have redistributed responsibilities to ensure timely waste evacuation,” he adds.
He notes that some operators voluntarily relinquished parts of their routes to allow more efficient service delivery.
The reform, he says, strengthens accountability within the Private Sector Participation framework and aligns waste management with Lagos’ growing population.
Residents are urged to cooperate with accredited operators as LAWMA intensifies monitoring and enforcement to ensure cleaner neighbourhoods.
