EKITI, Nigeria – Armed attackers have killed a pastor and abducted several worshippers during a late-night church crusade in Ekiti State, in an assault that has triggered outrage and renewed fears over insecurity in rural communities.
The attack occurred on April 28 during an all-night service at a Christ Apostolic Church in Eda Oniyo-Ekiti, Ilejemeje Local Government Area, according to the Nigeria Police Force.
Police spokesperson Abutu Sunday on Wednesday said a group of gunmen stormed the gathering, opened fire and fled with an undisclosed number of victims into a nearby forest.
“The attackers fatally shot the pastor and abducted some members of the congregation,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, Falade Michael, has ordered a full-scale investigation and launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
The incident has drawn condemnation from the Christian Association of Nigeria, which described it as “a brutal assault on humanity and the sanctity of life.”
CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, demanded the immediate release of the abducted worshippers and urged authorities to strengthen security in vulnerable communities.
The attack adds to a growing list of violent incidents targeting places of worship, raising concerns over safety and intelligence gaps in rural Nigeria.
