CALABAR, Nigeria – The Cross River State Government has intensified its crackdown on illegal and substandard health facilities, warning erring operators to comply or face closure after a sweeping inspection exposed critical lapses.
The enforcement, approved by Commissioner for Health Henry Egbe Ayuk and led by Stephen Agbor, assessed 19 facilities across Yakurr, Obubra and Ikom local government areas.
Inspectors found widespread violations, including unqualified personnel, poor sanitation, unsafe medical waste disposal and lack of essential emergency equipment such as oxygen cylinders and ambulances.
Some facilities were operating without government approval, while others were staffed by individuals posing as healthcare providers.
Authorities issued a three-month ultimatum to Ade Family Clinic and Rockalive Medical Centre to upgrade services or face shutdown.
Officials described the findings as “alarming,” reaffirming a zero-tolerance stance on quackery and unsafe practices.
The crackdown forms part of broader reforms aimed at safeguarding patient safety and restoring confidence in the state’s healthcare system.
