Vatican City – Pope Leo XIV calls for peace in the Middle East, stressing a “moral obligation” to protect civilians amid escalating violence in Lebanon.
Speaking at St Peter’s Square on Sunday, the pontiff expresses solidarity with affected communities.
“I am closer than ever to the beloved Lebanese people in these days of sorrow and fear,” he says.
He emphasises that international law and human conscience demand protection of civilian populations during conflict.
“Stop! It is time for peace… sit at the table of dialogue,” he urges.
The appeal comes as tensions rise involving Iran, the United States and regional actors, with no breakthrough in recent diplomatic talks.
Lebanese authorities report over 2,000 deaths amid ongoing strikes linked to conflict involving Hezbollah.
The pope reiterates calls for de-escalation and dialogue, warning against continued violence.
