MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – A video released by insurgents linked to Boko Haram shows hundreds of abducted residents from Ngoshe community alive in captivity, weeks after abduction in Borno State.
The footage, obtained Thursday, features women and children surrounded by armed fighters from Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad, a faction of the group.
In the six-minute clip, a masked spokesperson claims the captives are unharmed. “As you can see, they are fine. We do not harm them,” he says, addressing concerns raised by local mediators.
One of the victims confirms their identity as residents of Ngoshe in Gwoza Local Government Area, saying they were abducted during a recent attack but are receiving basic care.
“We are alive and healthy… some of the sick are treated,” she says, while appealing for rescue.
She calls on President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governor Babagana Zulum, and Senator Ali Ndume to intervene.
The Borno South Youths Alliance confirms that 416 victims are currently in captivity following engagements with the insurgents.
“We were provided with an official figure of 416 victims alive,” says President Samaila Kaigama, stressing that the group’s involvement is purely humanitarian.
