ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s weather agency warns of widespread thunderstorms, moderate rainfall, and strong winds expected across multiple states this week, raising concerns over safety, transport disruption, and property damage.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency issues a three-day forecast from Monday to Wednesday, urging residents nationwide to take precautions.
In the northern region, largely sunny mornings are expected before conditions shift rapidly, with thunderstorms forecast later in the day across Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, and Kaduna states.
The North-Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa, may experience isolated thunderstorms in the morning, intensifying into broader storms by afternoon and evening.
Southern states are likely to face the most persistent impact. Cloudy conditions are expected to dominate, with early morning thunderstorms forecast midweek over Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, before spreading widely later in the day.
NiMet warns that strong winds accompanying the storms could damage property and create hazardous driving conditions.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, and disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms to reduce risk.
“Severe weather conditions may pose safety threats if precautions are not taken,” the agency says.
Nigeria regularly experiences seasonal storms, but forecasters say increasing weather variability is making conditions less predictable, heightening the need for early warnings and preparedness.
Authorities stress that compliance with safety advisories remains critical to minimising risks during the forecast period.
