AKURE, Nigeria – Police in Ondo State arrest a 23-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Owo, as authorities intensify action against gender-based violence.
The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Usman, is accused of dragging the victim into an office in Ijebu Quarters on March 29 and assaulting her.
In a statement on Monday, the victim alleges she was threatened with consequences if she reported the incident.
Police say the case is reported, leading to the suspect’s arrest by operatives of the Gender-Based Violence Unit.
“Upon receipt of the report, operatives swiftly moved into action, leading to the arrest of the suspect,” says police spokesperson DSP Abayomi Jimoh.
The suspect remains in custody and is assisting with investigations.
The victim has received medical care at the General Hospital, Owo, while authorities arrange psychosocial support.
Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal condemns the act and orders a thorough and sensitive investigation.
Police confirm the suspect will be charged in court upon completion of investigations.
