LAGOS Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control warn Nigerians over counterfeit Cerelac baby food circulating in Lagos, raising urgent concerns about infant safety.
The agency on Friday says fake Cerelac Mixed Fruits and Wheat products, falsely labelled as manufactured by Nestlé Spain, are discovered following a complaint received by Nestlé Nigeria.
According to NAFDAC, the product carries Batch Code 308002910 and emits an unusual odour “suggestive of possible contact with fuel,” triggering safety concerns.
A preliminary review shows the product has expired despite bearing a future expiry date of October 2026, indicating tampering.
Investigations trace the counterfeit goods to Maxland Shopping Centre in Okota, where the products are seized and removed from circulation.
“It is important to note that Nestlé Nigeria is not aware of the supply channels,” the agency states.
NAFDAC warns that counterfeit infant food may lack essential nutrients and could contain harmful substances, posing risks such as stunted growth, severe illness, or death.
The regulator urges consumers and healthcare professionals to report suspected fake products while intensifying nationwide surveillance.
