ABUJA, Nigeria – The World Health Organization is urging households worldwide to switch to lower-sodium salt substitutes as part of efforts to reduce heart disease and high blood pressure.
In guidance shared Friday, the agency says replacing regular salt with potassium-enriched alternatives can significantly cut sodium intake without altering taste.
“These substitutes provide less sodium while supporting healthy blood pressure,” the WHO says.
Excess sodium consumption remains a leading driver of hypertension and cardiovascular disease globally, making dietary changes a critical public health strategy.
The organisation notes that potassium-based salt alternatives maintain flavour, allowing families to cook привычные meals without noticeable differences.
Health experts say the approach offers a simple, scalable intervention for reducing non-communicable diseases.
However, the WHO advises caution for individuals with kidney conditions, recommending medical consultation before switching.
The guidance forms part of broader efforts to address rising global cases of heart disease linked to diet and lifestyle factors.
