ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – Authorities in Ogun State launch an investigation after a suspected gas leak leaves more than 30 students and teachers hospitalised and forces the closure of two schools.
Governor Dapo Abiodun on Thursday directed security agencies to determine the source of the emission in Ijebu-Ode and prevent further exposure.
The incident effects pupils and staff of Our Lady of Apostles Primary and Secondary Schools, prompting emergency response measures.
Environment Commissioner Ola Oresanya says a specialised team has been deployed to trace the chemical source.
“We are conducting a full investigation to identify the origin and prevent recurrence,” Oresanya says.
The state government orders the immediate closure of the affected schools and establishes an emergency situation room at the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode to provide free treatment.
Communities including Makalewo, Ogbogbo and Molipa report exposure, though officials say all affected individuals are in stable condition.
Local government chairman Dare Alebiosu joins officials on an inspection visit to assess the situation.
Residents are urged to remain calm as environmental authorities continue monitoring air quality.
Officials insist the incident poses no wider security threat, even as investigations continue into the source of the leak.
