ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria records a rise in natural gas reserves to 215.19 trillion cubic feet, even as crude oil reserves decline slightly, signalling a shift in energy priorities.
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission on Wednesday confirmed the figures, with Chief Executive, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, highlighting growth driven by new discoveries.
“Gas reserves continue to grow due to sustained exploration and improved assessments,” she says.
Oil reserves fall marginally to 37.01 billion barrels, while the gas reserve life index extends to 85 years compared to 59 years for oil.
Analysts say the trend reflects Nigeria’s gradual pivot toward gas as a cleaner and more sustainable energy source.
