CALABAR, Nigeria – The Cross River State House of Assembly suspends four councillors for 90 days over allegations of cultism, violence, and misconduct within the Akpabuyo Legislative Council.
Lawmakers act after reviewing a petition accusing the officials of sponsoring intimidation and attacking council workers.
Speaker, Elvert Ayambem, condemns the conduct.
“Public office holders must uphold discipline and respect the rule of law,” he says.
The Assembly invokes legal provisions to launch a formal investigation, assigning the Judiciary Committee to probe the allegations.
Lawmakers stress that disputes must follow due process, warning against violence in democratic institutions.
