KATSINA, Nigeria – Health authorities confirm a fresh Lassa fever case in Katsina State, bringing total infections to three and deaths to two amid concerns over rising fatality rates.
Consultant infectious disease expert, Mohammed Abubakar, on wednesday says a female patient is currently receiving treatment in isolation and is responding well.
“As we speak, three cases are confirmed. Two patients have died, while one is recuperating,” he states.
Abubakar warns the outbreak is deadlier this year, with fatality rates nearing 25 per cent compared to previous averages of 10–30 per cent.
He attributes shifting outbreak patterns to climate change, displacement, and poor hygiene, noting most cases are now concentrated in states including Benue, Ondo, and Edo.
Health officials urge vigilance, stressing early testing, use of protective equipment, and rodent control as key prevention measures.
