WHO-DG, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
ABUJA, Nigeria – The World Health Organization condemns a surge in attacks on health workers in southern Lebanon, reporting multiple deaths and injuries amid escalating conflict.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says nine paramedics are killed in recent incidents, bringing March fatalities to 51.
“Health workers are protected under international humanitarian law and should never be targeted,” he states.
More than 120 medical personnel are injured, with attacks striking emergency responders and health facilities across several.
The violence forces the closure of four hospitals and 51 primary healthcare centres, severely disrupting medical services.
The escalation follows intensifying regional conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, with civilian infrastructure increasingly affected.
Officials warn the attacks are worsening an already fragile healthcare system, limiting access to life-saving services.
