JOS, Nigeria – Plateau State records a significant gap in tuberculosis detection, with only 5,397 cases identified in 2025 against an estimated 11,549 infections.
Health Commissioner Nicholas Baamlong attributes the shortfall to limited access to healthcare in rural communities.
“Untreated TB patients can infect 10 to 15 people yearly,” Baamlong warns during World Tuberculosis Day briefing.
The state expands diagnostic services and confirms that treatment remains free across designated facilities.
Currently, 640 out of 1,470 health centres offer integrated TB services, as authorities intensify efforts to bridge the detection gap.
Baamlong urges residents to seek medical attention for symptoms such as prolonged cough, weight loss, and night sweats.
The government reaffirms its commitment to reducing the TB burden and improving healthcare delivery statewide.
