ABUJA, Nigeria – Airfares are set to rise as aviation fuel prices soar, placing intense pressure on Nigerian airlines already grappling with escalating operational costs.
Industry checks show Jet A1 prices have surged from under ₦1,000 to as high as ₦2,700 per litre, driven largely by the Middle East crisis disrupting global crude supply.
Airline operators warn that ticket prices may double if the trend persists, with fuel now accounting for up to 45 per cent of operational costs.
An industry source says: “These are hard times… current ticket prices cannot be sustained for long.”
Aviation expert Samuel Caulcrick projects a 20–25 per cent increase in fares, noting that fuel has overtaken maintenance as the sector’s largest cost driver.
Rising crude prices—now above $110 per barrel—continue to push costs higher, leaving airlines with limited options but to adjust pricing.
