ABUJA, Nigeria – The Society for Family Health (SFH) has urged global leaders to prioritise neglected non-communicable diseases (NCDs), mental health, and African-led science at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
In a statement on Friday, SFH said its delegation — led by Managing Director Omokhudu Idogho and Policy Officer Yusuf Wada — joined world leaders, ministers, and partners in high-level sessions on strengthening health resilience.
“Africa cannot afford to be left behind in global science and health policymaking. Elevating African voices and institutions is key to inclusive solutions,” Idogho said.
A highlight of the week was a meeting on sickle cell disease and neglected NCDs, co-hosted by Africa CDC and Ghana. It secured pledges from Ghana, Kenya, Angola, and Congo, alongside new financing from Novo Nordisk Foundation, Novartis, and Wellcome Foundation.
“These commitments mark a turning point. For too long, diseases like sickle cell were ignored. Now, we see the political will and funding to drive change,” Wada noted.
