LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into a clinic linked to the reported death of a Lagos socialite known as “Elena”, who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure.
The probe is being conducted by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) following widespread social media reports that the woman developed complications during or shortly after the cosmetic surgery.
HEFAMAA Permanent Secretary Abiola Idowu confirms in a statement on Thursday that authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
According to Idowu, preliminary findings indicate that the clinic where the procedure reportedly took place is registered with the state regulatory agency.
However, she stresses that registration does not shield any facility from strict regulatory scrutiny.
“As the statutory regulatory body responsible for monitoring, licensing and accrediting healthcare facilities in Lagos State, HEFAMAA ensures that all health facilities comply with established operational standards, professional guidelines and patient safety protocols,” she says.
The agency notes that cosmetic and aesthetic procedures in Lagos are governed by strict medical regulations covering practitioner qualifications, infrastructure standards, infection control, patient consent, anaesthetic safety and emergency response capability.
Idowu says investigators are currently verifying the credentials of medical personnel involved and reviewing the level of care provided before, during and after the procedure.
“The government remains firmly committed to protecting the health and safety of all residents through strengthened regulatory oversight and strict enforcement of healthcare standards,” she adds.
Authorities urge the public to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified claims while the investigation continues.
