Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government activates $552 million in education financing under the HOPE-EDU programme, marking a major push to overhaul basic education nationwide.
The announcement was made in a statement on Tuesday by the Federal Ministry of Education, signed by Director of Press and Public Relations Boriowo Folasade.
Minister of Education Maruf Tunji Alausa describes the development as the fastest activation of education financing of this magnitude in Nigeria’s history, achieved within 12 months.
The funding is expected to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy, expand access to quality education and introduce stronger accountability systems in participating states.
The HOPE for Quality Basic Education for All initiative is jointly supported by the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education, aligning with the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative.
Federal education spending has increased significantly since 2022, reaching a record ₦3.520 trillion in the 2026 budget — the highest allocation in the sector’s history.
The ministry says the focus is on translating funding into measurable learning outcomes, improved teaching quality, increased equity and stronger oversight across the education system.
Officials say the programme underscores the government’s commitment to long-term human capital development and sustainable national growth.
