ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu calls on the Senate to amend Nigeria’s constitution to create state police, warning that decentralised security has become vital as insecurity worsens nationwide.
Speaking at an interfaith breakfast at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu tells lawmakers that federal security structures alone can no longer contain terrorism, banditry and insurgency.
“Start thinking how best to amend the constitution to incorporate state police,” he says. “We must secure our country and free our children from fear.”
Tinubu argues that state-level policing would strengthen grassroots intelligence and faster responses while complementing federal forces. He also thanks senators for backing his economic reforms, saying subsidy removal curbs “monumental corruption” and stabilises public finances.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio praises Tinubu’s leadership, saying reforms increase revenues for states and support infrastructure development.
