LAGOS, Nigeria – Flight operations fully resume at Murtala Mohammed International Airport after a fire outbreak disrupts activities at Terminal One, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria confirms.
FAAN Managing Director and Chief Executive Olubunmi Kuku says preliminary findings indicate that the fire originates from the ground floor of Terminal One, housing offices and a restaurant, before spreading to the roof.
“Some people sustained injuries, but no fatalities were recorded,” Kuku says, adding that emergency protocols are immediately activated.
Videos circulating on social media show thick smoke billowing from the terminal on Monday evening, raising concerns among passengers and airport workers.
In an update on X on Monday, FAAN says a crane is deployed to support rescue operations near the control tower, enabling the safe evacuation of all 14 people initially trapped in the building.
“A total of six casualties — three males and three females — are recorded. All are stable, with one transferred to the FAAN Headquarters Hospital for further evaluation,” the statement says.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service offer a different account of the fire’s origin.
Controller General Margaret Adeseye says the blaze started in the IT server room on the third floor of the five-storey E-wing of the departure lounge.
“The fire has been successfully confined through multi-agency efforts,” Adeseye says.
FAAN assures passengers that safety remains its top priority and says investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the incident.
