KANO, Nigeria – Police in Kano State arrest six suspected members of an interstate car theft syndicate and recover three stolen vehicles in what authorities describe as a major security breakthrough.
The Kano State Police Command confirms the arrests on Sunday, saying intelligence-led and technology-driven operations lead officers to dismantle the group operating across northern Nigeria.
Police spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, says operatives from the Command’s Special Intervention Squad arrest the first suspect, 35-year-old Aliyu Mamman, on Hotoro Ring Road on February 13, 2026.
“Mamman confesses to stealing vehicles across Kano, Kaduna and Katsina states and provides information that leads to the arrest of five accomplices,” Haruna says.
According to police, the remaining suspects — Abdulhamid Usman, Saliha Abdulhamid, Auwal Shuaibu, Sani Bala and Ahmad Mannir — are apprehended shortly after coordinated follow-up operations.
Their confessions result in the recovery of three stolen vehicles: a Golf Wagon, a Golf Opel and a Hijet minibus, locally known as Kurkura. Kano Police Arrest Six Suspects, Dismantle Interstate Car Theft Network
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori commends the tactical unit for what he calls “professional, patient and intelligence-driven policing,” stressing that vehicle theft remains a major contributor to organised crime.
The Command says the operation aligns with the national policing strategy of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, which prioritises community safety and proactive crime prevention.
Police add that investigations continue, while suspects will face prosecution after conclusion of inquiries.
