Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed a public toilet located on Savage Street, Ebute Metta, for allegedly discharging untreated sewage into a public drainage channel, in violation of environmental regulations.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement action on Thursday, describing the act as a serious public nuisance with significant health implications.
The facility was shut down on Wednesday after inspectors confirmed that raw effluent was being released into the community drain, causing offensive odours and visible sewage flow.
According to Wahab, “The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), on Wednesday, 18th February, 2026, sealed off a public toilet located at Savage Street, Ebute Metta, for the deliberate pumping of raw sewage into the public drain, resulting into offensive odour and sewage flow within the community, constituting public nuisance, environmental pollution, and posing significant risks to human health.”
He warned that such environmental violations threaten groundwater quality, public hygiene, and overall environmental safety, stressing the need for compliance with wastewater management standards.
Wahab also urged residents and business operators to adopt proper sanitation practices, adding, “@followlasg urges residents to adopt proper wastewater management and hygiene practices to support public health and promote environmental sustainability. Any act of environmental nuisance or pollution will attract appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution.”
