ABUJA, Nigeria – AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria has on Monday revealed plans to move its condom advocacy to streets and university campuses, warning that rising sexually transmitted infections (STIs) threaten progress against HIV.
Marking International Condom Day 2026, AHF plans road walks, free condom distribution, HIV testing and sexual health education in Anambra State and Abuja, under the theme “Just Use It.”
The Foundation links the global resurgence of STIs, particularly syphilis, to declining prevention funding.
“When condoms are sidelined, infections rise,” AHF says in a statement.
Africa Bureau Chief Martin Matabishi warns shrinking donor funding places pressure on African governments.
“Condoms are cheap and effective, yet access remains limited. Governments must step up,” he says.
AHF Nigeria’s Country Director Echey Ijezie says prevention remains the most cost-effective solution.
“Using condoms is still the best way to prevent HIV, STIs and unplanned pregnancies,” he says.
Nigeria has about 1.9 million people living with HIV, according to NACA, with higher burdens in Rivers, Benue and Akwa Ibom states.
