Protesters at Nigeria’s National Assembly over election reforms
ABUJA, Nigeria – Civil society groups and former presidential candidate Peter Obi lead a protest at Nigeria’s National Assembly, condemning the Senate’s removal of provisions for real-time electronic transmission of election results.
Demonstrators converged on the parliamentary complex early Monday morning, carrying placards reading “Say No to Electoral Fraud” and “E-Transmission Is a Must.”
Security operatives from the police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps deploy heavily, restricting access to surrounding roads.
Mr Obi arrives shortly after 10 a.m., joining activists calling for the passage of the Electoral Amendment Bill, which mandates electronic transmission directly from polling units.
The Senate’s decision last week sparks nationwide criticism, forcing Senate President Godswill Akpabio to schedule an emergency session.
Protesters argue that electronic transmission remains essential to curbing vote manipulation and restoring confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Political analysts say the growing public pressure highlights deepening concerns over electoral transparency ahead of future polls.
