ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Senate again delays passage of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026, after more than four hours of closed-door deliberations.
Lawmakers reconvene in plenary on Tuesday but adjourn without disclosing outcomes of discussions on the committee’s consolidated report.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio declines comment, effectively pushing deliberations to the next legislative day.
The delay follows the work of a seven-member ad hoc committee, chaired by Senator Niyi Adegbomore, tasked with harmonising lawmakers’ views on the bill. Members include Adamu Aliero, Aminu Tambuwal, Adams Oshiomhole, Danjuma Goje, Tony Nwoye, and Titus Zam.
The Senate initially moved into closed session to scrutinise proposed amendments submitted by Senator Simon Lalong, chair of the Electoral Matters Committee.
Observers say the prolonged silence underscores deep divisions over electoral reforms ahead of future elections, with transparency, technology, and dispute resolution among contentious issues.
