LAGOS, Nigeria – Six passengers have been confirmed dead and 23 others injured following a road crash around the Foursquare Camp area of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident on Monday in a statement issued in Abeokuta, Ogun State, describing it as a lone accident involving a heavy-duty vehicle.
According to the Ogun State FRSC Public Relations Officer, Odunsin Afolabi, the crash occurred at about 11:27 a.m. and was caused by fatigue and speeding, which made the driver lose control.
“The crash involved a DAF CF 380 trailer with registration number SNA 287 XA. It was a lone accident,” he said, adding that “a total of 29 persons were involved in the crash. Twenty-three sustained injuries, while six lost their lives.”
He noted that FRSC rescue operatives from the Ogunmakin Unit Command arrived at the scene within two minutes.
Afolabi cautioned motorists against conveying cattle alongside passengers, warning that such practices complicate rescue efforts and increase fatalities.
He said the injured victims and bodies of the deceased were taken to Oreoluwa Hospital at the GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, and Victory Hospital in Ogere.
The FRSC also advised motorists to service and inspect vehicles regularly, especially heavy-duty trucks, and urged drivers to avoid speeding, maintain control on expressways, and comply strictly with road safety regulations.
