IMO, Nigeria – The Federal Government distributes free agricultural tools to 90 farmer groups in Imo State to fast-track food security, cut input costs and boost smallholder productivity under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The intervention takes place in Owerri on Saturday, with the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, represented by a ministry director, Iyere-Usiahon Perpetua. Beneficiaries include cooperative societies, commodity associations, farmers with special needs and internally displaced persons.
“This programme delivers on the Renewed Hope Agenda and places food security at the centre of national priorities,” Kyari says. He adds that Nigeria aligns with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, stressing that agriculture remains key to jobs, productivity and lower living costs.
Items distributed include power tillers, knapsack sprayers, water pumps, herbicides and liquid fertilisers—inputs many smallholders struggle to afford amid rising prices. Kyari recalls President Tinubu’s July 2023 declaration of a state of emergency on food security as proof of sustained political commitment.
“Since assuming office on August 21, 2023, we realigned programmes to meet the core mandate of the ministry,” he says.
Imo State officials and farmers welcome the support. Permanent Secretary Alexander Onwumere urges beneficiaries not to resell the tools, while cooperative member Chinedu Madu calls the initiative “timely and productivity driven.”
