LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, intercepts 3,461 parcels of Cannabis sativa valued at over ₦1.55 million in coordinated anti-smuggling operations across Ogun State.
The seized drugs are formally handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Idiroko Special Area Command, by the Area Comptroller, Mr Olukayode Afeni.
Speaking during the handover, Afeni says the operation reflects Customs’ commitment to curbing illicit drug trafficking and strengthening national security.
“We appeal to traditional rulers to continue educating youths on the dangers of drug abuse and the consequences of involvement in smuggling,” Afeni says.
He notes that sustained collaboration between Customs and NDLEA remains central to tackling drug trafficking, illegal arms proliferation and other transnational crimes.
Afeni adds that intelligence-led patrols and community cooperation have improved the command’s ability to intercept illicit substances before they reach the streets.
Responding, NDLEA Commander Olaniyi Ekundayo commended the Customs officers for their vigilance and professionalism.
“The fight against drug abuse is not for NDLEA alone. It is a collective responsibility that requires the commitment of all security agencies and the wider society,” Ekundayo says.
He stresses that the seizure will help prevent drug-related crimes and protect vulnerable youths from the harmful effects of substance abuse.
Both agencies reaffirm their resolve to deepen operational synergy and sustain enforcement efforts aimed at building a safer and healthier society.
