LAGOS, Nigeria – A major fire tears through a commercial tech hub in Lagos’ Computer Village, Ikeja, destroying computer stock worth millions of naira and triggering an early-morning emergency response.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, says the blaze erupts around 1:55 a.m. on Tuesday at a one-storey commercial building used primarily for storing and selling computers and accessories. Emergency responders arrive within minutes as flames rapidly intensify.
“Upon arrival at about 2:15 a.m., our response team encounters active flames and thick smoke engulfing the upper floor of the building,” Oke-Osanyintolu says. “The structure is heavily stocked with highly flammable computer equipment, which fuels the rapid spread of the fire.”
No fatalities are recorded, but one firefighter sustains minor injuries during the operation and receives immediate treatment from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
Officials say structural assessments are underway to determine the building’s safety.
Although the cause of the fire remains unknown, investigations are ongoing. LASEMA urges traders and business owners in Computer Village and similar markets to strengthen fire safety measures and ensure proper handling and storage of electrical equipment.
