PLATEAU, Nigeria – Plateau State security forces have successfully rescued 25 children abducted by armed bandits in a daring operation that underscores growing efforts to tackle insecurity in northern Nigeria.
The abduction occurred on 21 December 2025 in Sabon Layi, Wase Local Government Area, as the children were en route to a religious Maulud celebration. Disguised as local vigilantes, the perpetrators ambushed the group on a rural road, forcibly transporting them to a concealed location.
Secretary to the State Government Samuel Jatau received the rescued children in Jos, praising the collaborative effort that led to their safe return. “The security agencies, particularly the DSS, launched a manhunt and rescued all the children unhurt. A few even managed to escape before the mission was completed,” Jatau said.
The rescued group included 19 boys and six girls, who underwent medical evaluations to ensure their well-being before being reunited with their families. Officials highlighted that the success boosts public confidence in law enforcement and demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations in vulnerable communities.
Security analysts say such proactive interventions send a strong message to criminal elements operating in remote areas and help reassure the public of government commitment to citizen safety.
Authorities continue to monitor Sabon Layi and surrounding areas, with patrols and surveillance intensified to prevent future incidents.
