KATSINA, Nigeria – Katsina State takes delivery of 15 fully equipped ambulances to strengthen emergency medical response along major highways, as the government moves to reduce fatalities from road traffic accidents.
The ambulances are deployed as part of Governor Dikko Radda’s public safety agenda, targeting high-risk transport corridors where traffic volume has increased following extensive road rehabilitation.
Confirming the delivery in Katsina, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Abdulkadir Mamma-Nasir, says the intervention responds to the growing need for rapid medical attention following accidents on improved highways.
“The ambulances, to be stationed along major highways, are intended to provide prompt medical assistance to accident victims,” Mamma-Nasir states.
He explains that improved road networks, while boosting economic activity and mobility, also require enhanced emergency infrastructure to protect lives.
To ensure sustainability, the governor establishes a multi-agency committee to oversee the operation and maintenance of the ambulance fleet. The committee draws membership from road maintenance agencies, accident prevention units, road safety authorities, the Ministry of Health and local government councils.
Mamma-Nasir notes that the structure guarantees coordination, accountability and efficient deployment across the state. “This initiative reflects the governor’s fulfilled commitment to improve road safety and enhance the overall quality of life for residents,” he adds.
Public safety experts say positioning ambulances along highways significantly reduces response time, a critical factor in trauma survival. They describe the Katsina initiative as a preventive approach that aligns infrastructure expansion with emergency preparedness.
Residents have welcomed the move, expressing hope that quicker response times will reduce fatalities and long-term injuries from road crashes.
The state government says the ambulances will become operational immediately, reinforcing Katsina’s emergency healthcare capacity and complementing ongoing investments in transport and public safety infrastructure.
