LAGOS, Nigeria – A Lagos mobile court convicts a 48-year-old man, Makinde Rasaq, for indiscriminate refuse disposal, reinforcing the state’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental offences.
The Special Offences (Mobile) Court sitting in Oshodi finds Rasaq guilty on multiple counts, including illegal dumping, obstruction of enforcement officers, non-patronage of waste operators and breach of peace.
Rasaq was arrested on Sunday by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit.
Delivering judgment on Monday, Magistrate F.J. Adefioye sentences him to various terms of community service or imprisonment across seven counts.
Following sentencing, the convict is remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Facility.
Reacting to the judgment, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, says the prosecution aligns with the government’s commitment to enforcing sanitation laws. “Lagos will not tolerate environmental infractions,” Wahab says.

“A cleaner Lagos is a collective responsibility, and compliance with the law is non-negotiable,” he adds.
The state government reiterates that offenders will continue to face prosecution to deter environmental abuse.
