OYO, Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) destroy fake, banned and substandard drugs and other regulated products valued at over ₦55 billion in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The destruction took place on Thursday at the Moniya dumpsite in Akinyele Local Government Area, as part of efforts to prevent seized products from re-entering the market.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, says the exercise aligns with the agency’s mandate to safeguard public health. She is represented by Florence Ubah, Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement. “Up for destruction today are substandard medicines, unwholesome foods, unsafe cosmetics and other expired regulated products,” Adeyeye says.
She reveals that more than 70 compliant companies, NGOs and trade unions voluntarily handed over damaged and expired products, describing the gesture as commendable.
“The estimated street value of the products destroyed today stands at ₦55,436,844,470,” Adeyeye states, underscoring NAFDAC’s zero tolerance for illicit drugs.
She commends the Nigeria Police, Customs, Army, DSS, NDLEA, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria and NSCDC for their collaboration.
Adeyeye urges community leaders, journalists and health professionals to intensify public awareness against patronising quacks and unauthorised dealers.
