ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu is set to present the Federal Government’s proposed ₦54 trillion 2026 budget before a joint session of the National Assembly on Friday, formally launching deliberations on Nigeria’s fiscal direction for the coming year.
The planned presentation is disclosed during Thursday’s plenary session of the House of Representatives, where Speaker Tajudeen Abbas reads a letter from the President notifying lawmakers of his intention to address both chambers in person. “Mr. President has indicated his readiness to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill before a joint sitting of the National Assembly on Friday,” Abbas tells the House.
The proposed budget is expected to outline the administration’s key policy priorities, revenue projections, and expenditure plans as the government continues economic reforms aimed at stabilising public finances and stimulating growth.
Following the presentation, the Senate and the House of Representatives will begin detailed scrutiny of the estimates through their respective committees. Lawmakers are expected to engage ministries, departments, and agencies on budget assumptions, allocations, and performance benchmarks.
The budget process will culminate in the passage of the 2026 Appropriation Act, which authorises government spending for the fiscal year.
Analysts say the budget will be closely watched for its approach to debt servicing, infrastructure funding, social welfare, and economic diversification, amid persistent inflationary pressures and revenue challenges.
The presidency says the proposal aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises economic resilience, job creation, and improved public service delivery.
