KOGI, Nigeria – Kogi State security forces seize a massive cache of sophisticated weapons during a coordinated raid on criminal hideouts, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo announces, describing the operation as a decisive blow against organised crime.
The discovery follows more than a week of intelligence-led surveillance and an overnight assault on a key criminal enclave, which yields dozens of assault rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and other military-grade equipment. The governor disclosed the development on Tuesday during a press briefing in Lokoja.
Governor Ododo links the intensified security push to his recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, saying the encounter sharpens his resolve to protect lives and property. “When I met Mr President, I expected commendation, but he told me to go back and do more for my people. That statement re-energised me,” Ododo says.
Security agencies recovered 24 AK-47 rifles, 23 pump-action rifles, a Tavor rifle, an FN rifle, four Barrett pistols, four Browning rifles, 42 magazines and over 520 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. Officers also seize tear gas canisters, handcuffs, holsters and submachine gun parts.
Although no suspects are arrested at the scene, Ododo calls the operation a major breakthrough, noting that Kogi’s location—bordering ten states—makes it vulnerable to criminal transit and arms trafficking. “We will never bow to criminals, and we will never negotiate with them,” the governor declares.
He praises the Department of State Services, the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for what he calls round-the-clock commitment.
The governor urges residents to remain calm, continue normal activities and support security agencies with timely intelligence, reaffirming his administration’s “unwavering focus” on public safety.
