Edo Governor, Monday Okpebholo signing asset protection and court restoration bills
EDO, Nigeria – Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo presents a ₦939.85 billion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year, signalling an aggressive push for infrastructure-led growth and social development.
The governor submits the appropriation bill, tagged the Budget of Hope and Growth, to the Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday. He says the plan builds on 2025 gains while ensuring government spending delivers visible benefits across key sectors.
Capital expenditure dominates the proposal, with ₦637 billion — 68 per cent of total spending — allocated to projects in roads, schools, hospitals, housing, water supply and urban renewal. Recurrent expenditure stands at ₦302 billion, representing 32 per cent. “This budget is about development the people can see and feel,” Okpebholo tells lawmakers, stressing his administration’s focus on security, infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare and job creation.
Projected revenue includes ₦160 billion from Internally Generated Revenue, ₦480 billion from Federation Account allocations, ₦153 billion in grants and capital receipts, and ₦146 billion from Public-Private Partnerships.
The economic sector receives the largest share at ₦614.2 billion, covering agriculture, roads, transport, energy and urban development. Planned projects include rural and urban road construction, completion of two flyovers, drainage upgrades and expansion of farm estates with irrigation.
The social sector gets ₦148.9 billion for education, healthcare, youth development and social welfare, while administration and governance receive ₦157.7 billion to fund civil service reforms, e-governance and revenue optimisation.
Okpebholo says the budget aligns with his SHINE Agenda — Security, Health, Infrastructure, Natural Resources and Education — and assures residents that growth will be driven by efficiency, not additional financial burdens.
