LAGOS, Nigeria – A fatal collision on Ikorodu Road on Sunday killed an eight-month-old baby and an adult woman on Sunday, leaving ten other passengers injured, Lagos traffic authorities confirm.
The crash occurs opposite Olabode House, between Anthony and Obanikoro, involving a red Tata commercial bus travelling from Palmgroove and an oncoming Volkswagen bus.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), preliminary investigations show the Tata bus travels at excessive speed before losing mechanical and directional control. “The bus veers off its lane, breaches the median barrier and collides head-on with the Volkswagen,” LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq says.
The impact kills an adult female passenger instantly, while the infant later dies from injuries sustained in the crash.
LASTMA officials, supported by members of the public, rescue ten victims — including both drivers — from the wreckage. The injured are transported to nearby hospitals by the Lagos State Ambulance Service.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expresses condolences to the bereaved families and renews calls for responsible driving. “Speeding and poor vehicle conditions remain deadly threats on our roads,” he warns.
Authorities say investigations continue as traffic safety campaigns intensify across the state.
