BORNO, Nigeria — Nigerian troops repel a coordinated attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on a military base in Borno State, destroying terrorist logistics and neutralising vehicle-borne explosives.
The attack targeted the Forward Operating Base in Mairari late Friday night, but troops of Operation HADIN KAI thwarted the assault through combined ground and air operations, according to a statement on Saturday by Media Information Officer Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba.
Uba says the terrorists attempt to breach the base using two vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs), but troops detect and neutralise them before impact. “Surveillance and post-operation assessments confirm several terrorists are killed, while others flee with injuries,” he says.
Following the failed assault, troops of Sector 3, alongside the Theatre Command Quick Reaction Group, Nigeria Police Crack Team and Civilian Joint Task Force, conduct a sweep of the surrounding area.
The operation leads to the recovery of AK-47 rifles, magazines, PKT rounds, grenades, motorcycles, communication equipment, combat kits and medical supplies abandoned by fleeing fighters.
Uba notes that the destruction of the VBIEDs causes minor road damage but confirms that the base is not breached, highlighting the alertness and resilience of the troops.
He adds that soldiers maintain aggressive patrols to deter further attacks and reassure residents.
Operation HADIN KAI reiterates its commitment to protecting civilians, dismantling terrorist networks and restoring lasting peace across Nigeria’s North-East.
