OSOGBO, Nigeria – The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has issued a strong warning to Osun State residents over the dangerous practice of storing petrol and other flammable products in homes ahead of Christmas and New Year festivities.
State Coordinator, Mr Kunle Adeyemo on Thursday told journalists that stockpiling fuel inside residences poses “grave fire risks” capable of causing large-scale destruction, loss of life and avoidable tragedies. “Storing petroleum products at home could cause fire outbreaks, leading to loss of life and property,” he cautioned during a media briefing in Osogbo.
Adeyemo urged residents to resist panic buying, assuring them that supply chains are stable and capable of meeting demand throughout the festive season. He described hoarding as “unnecessary, unsafe and counterproductive.”
Enforcement teams have been deployed to monitor filling stations and depots suspected of product diversion, meter tampering, illegal adjustments or the sale of substandard fuel.
“Any marketer caught hoarding fuel or engaging in illegal pump adjustments will be sanctioned,” Adeyemo said, reaffirming the agency’s zero-tolerance stance.
He added that federal authorities have stocked distribution networks nationwide, dismissing speculation about shortages. “Petroleum products are available in all depots around the country,” he confirmed.
