ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government releases N3.7 billion under the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSEF), reinforcing its commitment to improving welfare and productivity in Nigeria’s public tertiary institutions.
The Ministry of Education confirms that the funds have been disbursed to 49 federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education nationwide. The intervention targets both academic and non-academic staff, addressing long-standing welfare concerns and strengthening institutional stability.
In a statement issued on Friday, Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade says the payment reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at repositioning tertiary education as a driver of national development.
“The release of TISSEF funds is a clear demonstration of the government’s resolve to reposition Nigeria’s tertiary education system and resolve lingering staff welfare issues,” the statement reads.
Beyond financial relief, the ministry highlights measurable progress in gender balance across beneficiary institutions. Female representation among non-academic staff rises from 17 per cent to 83 per cent, while gender parity among academic staff also improves significantly.
Education Minister Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa describes the intervention as a strategic investment in human capital. “Our lecturers and education support staff are the backbone of this system. Prompt disbursement shows that the government values their contribution,” he says.
The Presidency adds that TISSEF aligns with broader economic reforms. “This is part of President Tinubu’s vision to move Nigeria from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-driven economy,” the statement notes.
Authorities say subsequent disbursements will expand coverage, deepen inclusion and further strengthen Nigeria’s transition to a competitive knowledge economy.
