ABUJA, Nigeria – The Democratic Republic of Congo has declared its 16th Ebola outbreak after recording 42 consecutive days without new cases and confirming the recovery of the last patient, Africa CDC announced on Tuesday.
The outbreak, centred in Kasai Province and first declared on 4 September 2025, resulted in 53 confirmed cases, 11 probable cases, and 34 confirmed deaths. “This success is the result of exceptional determination and exemplary coordination,” said Africa CDC Director General Dr Jean Kaseya, praising the DRC Government, health authorities, partners, and affected communities.
Authorities attribute containment to strong surveillance, community engagement, extensive vaccination campaigns, and preparedness measures. Over 44,400 people, including frontline workers and high-risk contacts, received vaccines, with more than 48,000 doses deployed.
Dr Kaseya stressed that managing an outbreak does not end with the last case. “Every outbreak must be rigorously documented – what worked, what failed, what shifted the trajectory, and what needs improvement,” he said, announcing a USD1 million allocation to support post-epidemic studies in collaboration with national and international partners.
