ABUJA, Nigeria – Academic activities at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) are set to resume after the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) suspended its strike, bringing relief to thousands of stranded students.
The union announced the development on Monday via its official X handle, confirming that members voted to end the industrial action after reviewing progress made in negotiations with the university management.
“Our congress carefully assessed the commitments presented by management and agreed that suspending the strike is the appropriate step,” a senior union official said.
The strike had disrupted academic operations for several weeks, leaving students at home and significantly delaying the university’s academic calendar.
AAUA management is expected to issue a detailed resumption circular outlining reopening dates, revised examination schedules and faculty-level procedures to ensure an orderly transition back to normal activities.
Students expressed relief following the announcement.
“We are happy this is finally over,” said Olamide Adeniran, a 300-level student. “The delay affected our finances, our mental stability and our plans.”
ASUU embarked on the action to demand improved lecturer welfare, better institutional funding and the fulfilment of outstanding agreements. While details of the settlement remain confidential, sources within the institution say management made concrete commitments to address key demands raised during negotiations.
Parents and guardians also welcomed the suspension, noting that uncertainty about their children’s academic progress had caused significant strain.
Departments, administrative units and student groups are now preparing for a full return of campus activities. The university is expected to release additional guidelines in the coming days to streamline the resumption process across all faculties.
