BORNO, Nigeria – Security forces in Borno State have rescued one girl and launched a major search for 13 others abducted by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters in Askira/Uba Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed the incident on Monday, stating that the District Head of Huyum reported the abduction on 22 November after 14 girls harvesting on farmland were seized.
Daso said the command immediately mobilised police units and alerted the Nigerian military, Civilian Joint Task Force and vigilantes. “Our operatives, alongside the military and local volunteers, are actively combing the area. We are determined to bring back the remaining girls safely,” he said.
According to security officials, the gunmen arrived on motorcycles, surrounded the girls and forced them into bush paths leading toward the Sambisa axis. One girl later escaped during the coordinated operation and was rescued unharmed.
Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid urged residents to remain vigilant and share any information that could aid the mission. “We are intensifying efforts on all fronts, and community cooperation remains crucial,” he said.
He advised farmers in rural areas to operate only within zones covered by security patrols while authorities continue clearing threats in remote communities.
